There are many different legends that try to explain their origin.

JM Barrie, who later wrote Peter Pan, said in the story The Little White bird that fairies were born when the first baby laughed & that laugh broke into thousands of pieces that skipped about & became the fairies that we know & love today.

The word fairy (or faerie) is used to describe a wide variety of different spirits that come in all shapes, sizes & colors. There are pixies & sprites, elves, & nymphs to name only a few.

Then there blue fairies & pink fairies, green fairies, water fairies & fairies associated with particular seasons.

Some fairies are tiny & some are nearly the same size as we are.

What to do if you want to attract a woodland fairy into your garden.

Woodland faeries & their close relatives flower fairies, as their names suggest, dwell in nature.  They do not like being inside & are most at home amongst wild plants & flowers.

So if you want to attract a fairy you should keep your garden a little wild &, if you can, plant delicate woodland flowers.  As a general rule, if a butterfly likes it then a fairy will like it too. Try to attract other wildlife to your garden & the fairies will probably follow.

If you have a birdbath, keep it topped up & one day you could look out of the window to see a garden fairy having a wash in it.  You don’t have to have a huge garden, a few pots with some well loved flowers, a couple of crystals & a wind chime could do the trick.

It is also believed that some fairies, particularly the big ones love milk & berries & the smell of fresh thyme, so you could  try leaving a gift for them.

 

Is it a fairy? Is it a pixie? Is it an elf?

It seems there is some confusion as to the difference between types of magical creatures. Just as animals come in a vast range of sizes, shapes & colors, so do the little folk (although in some cases they are not so little). You only have to look at a chihuahua standing next to a husky or even a great dane to see the huge variety in breeds of dog. And so it is with enchanted spirits.

Some say that a fairy has wings & a wand but a pixie does not. Others say that fairies are mostly nice & good natured, whereas pixies are impish & mischievous & have pointy ears. Still others say that you should look at the type & color of the costumes to see whether they resemble petals or have lots of sparkle.

Because stories of fantastical beings have been passed down through folklore, there is no definitive answer. Even Tinkerbell herself has been called both a fairy & a pixie.

The best advice we can give is that when you are looking for Halloween outfits it doesn’t really matter. As long as you pick from the fantasy costumes that you love you can call yourself whatever you want – it doesn’t matter what the label says.

Of course if you happen to meet one of these spirit people & you’re not quite sure which type it is, then you should ask what it prefers to be called.
